Oxford Photo Diary

When we were editing pictures for the Harry Potter DIY walk in Oxford post we realised that we have a bunch of pretty pictures from Oxford that have nothing to do with Harry Potter. We thought of making a photo diary for Oxford which does not have any particular agenda but a lot of eye candy for architecture and history lovers.

This round structure is the Sheldonian Theatre which was built in the 1600s and was used for music concerts, graduation ceremonies and lectures. Wonder if these faces come alive at night and start talking to each other. What do you think they talk about? Are they intellectuals who discuss philosophy or are they simply gossiping about the students in the town?

The tower below, is fondly known as Carfax Tower. It is the only surviving part of the 12th-century St Martin’s Church. It is 74 feet tall and a a Grade II listed building. The tower has a six bell ring and the quarter boys which is what they are called because they chime every 15 minutes were refurbished.

ChristChurch College, one of the locations for Harry Potter really does look like a magical castle. The beautiful structure boasts of famous alumni like the writer Lewis Carroll, King Edward VII, the scientist Robert Hooke and many more.

Exploring Oxford on foot is th Make sure you wear comfortable shoes. Pop into the nearby pubs or cafés or both to give your feet some rest if required. If you are a cycling fan (we are not), you can rent out a cycle and cover the whole town. There are plenty of museums, galleries and libraries for nerds like us to spend the day in peace. From the famous Ashmolean Museum to the Museum of the History of Science, whatever subject you may want to geek about you will find a museum for it.

Like it? Pin it for later.

What did you think of this photo diary? Is it for keeps or just a hit and miss? Would you like to see more photo diaries from more locations? Let us know in the comments section below:

This card-carrying geek would definitely enjoy all those museums and libraries. Oxford isn’t that far away from home, but I’ve really only been there for work meetings, so never had much chance to wander among the dreaming spires. I need to make some time to explore properly, and definitely by comfortably shod Shanks’ Pony!

Oxford is the one place I dreamed of going one day to study, but it never happened. I can still imagine myself wandering around in awe of the architecture. The weather though is something that I dont miss from living in England. Looks a little wet 😀

Hahah yes the weather is wet like the rest of England. Still a beautiful city though.

Oxford is wonderful to visit, even for a non-Harry Potter fan like me. I was there about 15 years ago and would go back in a minute. The architecture is amazing, and all those spires! Your photos are lovely!

    • June 8, 2018 / 3:23 PM

True. You don’t have to be a Harry Potter fan to love Oxford.

I love your photo diary of Oxford. I was there 15 years ago and remember it just like you captured it. The local pubs make for a good pit stop. Definitely planning a trip in 2019.
